The need for training has long been recognised as being of primary importance, as a country's future accumulation of wealth rests heavily on the skills of its workforce.

Post-secondary training is provided by the University of Mauritius (UOM), the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE), the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) and the MCCI Center For Business Studies, while the Industrial and Vocational Training Board (IVTB) caters for technical training. A number of other registered Private Training Institutions further train school-leavers to join the labour force in Mauritius.

Training is also supplemented by a wide variety of courses available by distance learning, for which examinations are held locally: eg Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, Chartered Institute of Secretaries, … etc.
