Barcode Services

Today, the vast majority of products bear a bar code symbol to enable their efficient circulation across the supply and demand chain.  Through the bar coding system, products reach the consumer more rapidly and retailers can manage their stock more efficiently.

When matched with GS1 Global Standards, the bar coding system is a powerful means of information sharing and trade facilitation worldwide.

The bar code consists of those series of usually black and white stripes that the cashier runs through a scanner at the point-of-sale

Through the use of unique numbers GS1 BarCode system provides for:

  • automatic, rapid and accurate electronic identification of products, services, assets and locations,
  • additional information to be encoded, such as best before dates, serial numbers and batch numbers.

Usefulness:

  • Now tagged on most products, the GS1 BarCode enables a rapid and efficient flow of products to the consumer through rapid identification of the product at the point of sale,
  • The GS1 BarCode system of identification also applies throughout the supply chains; i.e. to all the different stages through which the product goes before reaching the consumer - the raw material suppliers, manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors and retailers,
  • This identification system is used by many sectors: trade, industry, health, transport and logistics to name a few,
  • Universal application: Global Standards for automatic identification.

How does GS1 BarCode work?

The GS1 BarCode system is based on a simple process. A number assigned to a product and corresponding data previously stored in a database is read and interpreted by a scanner, which is then transmitted to a computer. They are black and white stripes that allow reading the code, each band corresponding to a binary series.

Through this system, each purchase transaction made at the point of sale of a store, is automatically saved and added to the database. This process replaces the manual processes, reduces the margin of error, and accelerates the flow of goods.

Benefits of GS1 barcodes

The implementation of GS1 standards can provide significant improvements in logistics processes (inventory management, production management, goods receipt, shipment, point of sale) through the entire supply chain, in addition to

  • Reduced costs thanks to better supply chain management,
  • Increase sales figures through better product availability and check out efficiencies,
  • Effective communication between suppliers and distributors: standards can accelerate the transmission of information and improve its reliability,
  • A universal system, a common language, a solution for everyone.

Traceability

GS1 Barcoding is also the first step towards providing product traceability solutions.

Traceability is the capability for tracing goods along the distribution chain on a batch number or series number basis. Traceability is an important aspect for example in the automotive industry, where it makes recalls possible, or in the food industry where it contributes to food safety.

Food safety and traceability are currently at the forefront of both government and industry discussions around the world. Numerous initiatives  are being designed to introduce various forms of tracking and tracing functionalities in the food supply chain.

Because of its ability to provide globally unique identification of trade items, logistic units, parties and locations, the GS1 System is particularly well suited to be used for these purposes.
