Introduction
The Chamber’s involvement in Corporate Social Responsibility dates back to 1950, when a fund raising activity was organised in favour of a charitable organisation. A number of initiatives have been taken to enhance its role in CSR. In 1997, the Chamber launched the Mauritius Young Entrepreneurs Trust Project (MYET) with the aim to develop the potential creativity of young people who are economically and socially disadvantaged.
In April 2007, the Chamber has taken over from the Joint Economic Council (JEC) the management of the private sector participation the ‘Zones d’Education Prioritaires’ (ZEP) project. The philosophy of the ZEP is based on the premise that positive reinforcement is required to create favourable learning conditions for children living in less developed regions. By providing equal opportunities to all primary school children, this approach aims to combat inequalities.
