MCCI Advocates for Regional Trade Growth at the SADC Industrialisation Forum 2024

Regional Cooperation 27 Feb 2024

The Southern African Industrialisation Forum 2024, held over two days on 26 & 27 February 2024, is hosted by the SADC Business Council in a hybrid format, with the physical gathering taking place in Johannesburg.

Representing the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Mrs. Rooma Narrainen, Head of Advocacy, intervened during a panel discussion titled "Trade: Leveraging Trade for Economic Growth in the SADC Region: Navigating Challenges & Opportunities".

The session, moderated by Ms. Yavi Madurai, included speakers Mr. Ally Alexander Mwangolombe from SADC, Mr. Themba Khumalo from the AfCFTA Secretariat, and Mr. Peter Varndell, Chief Executive Officer of the SADC Business Council.

Mrs. Rooma Narrainen's perspective from the private sector emphasised the role of free trade agreements in promoting trade and investment, particularly from a Mauritian standpoint.

Her insights shed light on making the SADC region and the African continent an attractive destination for trade and investment, focusing on effective implementation of trade agreements, trade facilitation and reducing the costs of doing business.

The discussions also highlighted the contributions of organisations such as the SADC Business Council and the SADC Secretariat in achieving these objectives.

The importance of private sector engagement was also underscored, highlighting the need for enhanced collaboration between government, businesses, and regulatory institutions to develop efficient value chains and promote industrialisation in the SADC region.

The forum provided a platform for industry leaders to strategise on elements needed to propel Africa's economic growth and attract investors.

The speakers discussed streamlining business processes, fostering a conducive investment climate, and enhancing regional cooperation, amongst others.

The shared vision focused on creating an environment where businesses can thrive, markets can flourish, and opportunities can abound across the SADC, and within the region.

As the discussions continue, the MCCI remains committed to fostering dialogue for the advancement of Mauritius and the SADC region.
