AfCFTA Online Mechanism for Reporting, Monitoring and Eliminating Non- Tariff Barriers

Trade 20 Apr 2020

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) came into force in May 2019.

One of the key objectives of the AfCFTA is to progressively eliminate existing Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) and refrain from introducing new ones in order to enhance and facilitate intra Africa trade.

The 12th Extra-Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, held on 07th July 2019 in Niger, launched the operational phase of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), supported by a few instruments, including Online Mechanism on Reporting, Monitoring and Elimination of Non-Tariff Barriers.

The aim of the monitoring mechanism is to improve efficiency in identification and resolution of NTBs in the AfCFTA. The mechanism is accessible to the private sector and is linked to relevant regional and international agreements and institutions.
