The British High Commissioner to Mauritius, H.E Paul Brummel, paid a courtesy call at the MCCI on Thursday 14 August 2025. He was accompanied by Mrs Deeptee Bungaree-Goheeram, Country Director, Department for Business and Trade.
The delegation met with MCCI President, Mr Charles Harel, Secretary General, Dr Drishtysingh Ramdenee, Mrs Sarada Moothoosamy, Head of Finance and Management and Mrs Hansini Bhoobdasur, International Relations and Communications Manager.
Discussions centred on the UK-Eastern and Southern Africa Economic Partnership Agreement (UK-ESA EPA), which provides duty-free and quota-free access for Mauritian exports including textiles, fisheries, and agricultural products to the UK market. The meeting explored sectors covered under the agreement, particularly manufacturing, fisheries, and agro-processing industries.
MCCI President, Mr Charles Harel, presented the MCCI and provided an overview of its Business Units. Secretary General Dr Ramdenee outlined ongoing projects and initiatives under the organisation's strategic plan.
The Joint Business Council (JBC), established through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the British High Commission and MCCI in 2023, featured prominently in discussions. This council aims to create partnerships with UK private sector counterparts to enhance bilateral trade and investment flows.
Both parties emphasised the importance of trade and investment cooperation. The High Commissioner expressed interest in deeper engagement with MCCI members to maximise opportunities within the EPA framework sectors.
H.E Paul Brummel assured the MCCI of his continued support for strengthening UK-Mauritius trade relations and facilitating business partnerships between the two countries.
The meeting reinforced the commitment of both nations to leveraging the EPA framework for mutual economic benefit and sustainable development.
