Implementation of Subsidies on Essential Products

The Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Protection is implementing subsidies on five (5) essential commodities, namely Milk Powder, Edible Oil (Soyabean oil and Vegetable oil), Processed Cheese (excluding sliced cheese), Infant Milk Powder, and Baby Diapers.

The new maximum retail prices after subsidy are effective as from Tuesday 26 August 2025 and the subsidy mechanism will be applied as follows:


a. Subsidies will be applied to a limited list of product categories currently subject to maximum mark-up regulations.

 
b. A fixed subsidy amount is assigned to each product category and will be deducted directly from the retail price of the respective product.


c. The subsidy refund mechanism will be administered by the Mauritius Revenue Authority. All requests for refund from importers and local manufacturers must be submitted to the MRA in accordance with the established procedures.


d. Only retail sales to consumers and the general public will qualify for subsidy refunds. Wholesale transactions and institutional purchases are excluded from this scheme.
