The Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) launched the Digital Product Identity (DPI) – "A Piece of Paradise" platform on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Mauritius Network Services (MNS) headquarters in Ebène. The event, held as part of the Chamber's 175th anniversary celebrations, brought together government ministers, business leaders, and SME representatives.
The ceremony was attended by Hon. Aadil Ameer Meea, Minister of Industry, SME and Cooperatives, and Dr the Hon. Avinash Ramtohul, Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, alongside public officials, private sector representatives and several SMEs.
Dr. Drishtysingh Ramdenee, Secretary General of MCCI and CEO of GS1 Mauritius, opened the event by emphasising the collaboration between the three organising entities. “It is an honour to champion innovation and prosperity through the public-private partnership that is MNS, building on three decades of standardisation excellence,” he stated.
Dr. Ramdenee positioned the DPI as “an ambassador of Mauritian excellence,” explaining that “each product bearing our DPI tells the story of Mauritius – our know-how, our commitment to quality, and our vision of sustainable development. This is 'A Piece of Paradise' that we offer to the world.”
Hon. Aadil Ameer Meea highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative for local businesses. “The DPI assigns each product a QR code that provides information about its ingredients and origin, among other details, meeting the growing global consumer demand for transparency," he said. He also stated that Track2Asset addresses a genuine need for SMEs, who face challenges in the management of their tools, machinery, and equipment.
Hon. Avinash Ramtohul focused on the technological aspects of the platform. “We need a well-intentioned approach to make Mauritius a benchmark IT hub once again. We have launched a master plan based on 4 pillars supported by 5 levers, of which digital sustainability is one of the key pillars. Track2Asset meets a real need, as SMEs often find it difficult to invest in tracking and monitoring their equipment. I welcome this initiative by MNS, GS1 and the MCCI, which fits in perfectly with this vision,” he stated.
Rajnish Hawabhay, CEO of Mauritius Network Services stated: "Today, we did not just talk about technology — we saw how innovation, collaboration, and vision can come together to shape a smarter and more inclusive digital future for everyone," he explained.
The highlight of the event was the certificate presentation to four pioneer SMEs who received complimentary one-year Track2Asset memberships: Indika (manufacturing), AAH Upholstery (furniture), Petit Salé (agro-food), and Stonemaxx (construction materials). These companies will serve as case studies for the implementation of digital asset management across various sectors.
Representatives from the selected SMEs expressed their enthusiasm for the new technology. Arshini Ramlol, Operations & Production Officer at Stonemaxx Contracting Ltd stated: "Track2Asset will give me the visibility I need to manage our assets more efficiently. It will be an excellent tool for the company to track everything we have on-site, including machinery and storage."
The DPI platform creates a digital identity for Mauritian products, accessible through QR codes or RFID technology, and aligns with European Union Digital Product Passport requirements coming into effect in 2026. This initiative builds on the MCCI's 175-year history of supporting economic development, continuing the work begun in 1994 when the Chamber introduced barcode systems through GS1 Mauritius.
The event concluded with a networking session.
