Breakfast Business Meet with the President of the Republic of Seychelles

Cooperation 02 Dec 2020

An interactive session between the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr Wavel Ramkalawan, the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, and representatives of the private sector was held on 1 December 2020 at the Sugar Beach Hotel in Flic en Flac.

The meeting was organised in the margins of the State Visit of Mr Ramkalawan to Mauritius.

In his address, President Ramkalawan highlighted that it is a privilege for him to address the Mauritian business community as the private sector has greatly contributed and is still contributing to establish Mauritius as an economic powerhouse in the Indian Ocean. The number of Mauritian firms established in the Indian Ocean, he stated, shows that there is an opportunity to explore avenues of cooperation between Mauritius and Seychelles. As such, he invited Mauritian companies to invest in Seychelles, particularly in sectors which offer great opportunities such as recreation and leisure, blue economy, and aquaculture.

Furthermore, President Ramkalawan dwelt on the close ties of friendship and the long-lasting cooperation between Mauritius and Seychelles, adding that his Government will ensure that stronger bonds are created between the two nations.

For his part, Minister Padayachy underlined that Mauritius and Seychelles have since long forged an enduring partnership, built on the basis of their multi-faceted proximity.

Moreover, Dr Padayachy recalled that no less than 12 large Mauritian companies are currently operating in different business sectors in Seychelles. Beyond the traditional sectors that have sealed economic cooperation between Seychelles and Mauritius, emerging sectors such as the blue economy and technology represent strategic avenues that could be further exploited, he added.

The Secretary-General of the MCCI, Dr Yousouf Ismaël, who attended the event spoke about the avenues of cooperation which can be further explored between the business people of the two countries. He proposed that a ‘Mauritian desk’ be set up in Seychelles for streamlining of procedures and facilitation of Mauritian investment in Seychelles.
