GS1 is pleased to announce the publication of the GS1 General Specifications version 17.1.

The GS1 General Specifications is the foundational GS1 standard that defines how identifications keys, data attributes and barcodes must be used in business operations.

Every year, GS1's Identification System is improved based upon the real world need.

Highlights of the updates include:

• Clarifications & Notifications:

o   Creating more efficient GS1-128

o   GTIN Reuse Cessation notification

• Expanded functionality:

o   Enable identification of a Consumer Product Variant

• Additional functionality for GS1 Application Identifier:

o   Enable identification of pieces of a trade item, ex. : individual shoe, etc

o   Facilitate additional information with identification of pieces of a trade item, ex: production date, batch/lot number
