GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs) are prefixes used in barcodes and EPC / RFID tags to define the meaning and format of data attributes. 

AIs are used to include product data beyond the GTIN, such as batch / lot number, serial number, expiry date, to address specific industry needs for healthcare items, fresh foods, components and parts, logistics units, coupons, etc. Each Application Identifier is a standards two, three, or four digit numeric code.

GS1 is seeing the growing use of AIs in the various sectors and has defined over a 100 Application Identifiers (AIs).

The new data-driven web interface allows users, solution providers and other stakeholders to easily view and search the available AIs online.
